VSU Hosts 'The Happening' Thursday, Aug. 28

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University will be hosting the 17th annual “The Happening” from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug 28, on VSU’s front lawn.

It is free for businesses to take part in “The Happening,” which is intended to connect VSU students with the world outside of campus. Last year, over 100 businesses from all around Valdosta participated, making it the largest “Happening” ever. With more than 150 businesses already registered, Robyn Vickery, director of Student Life, said she expects this year’s event to be even more successful than the last. Bank of America, Wild Adventures, Lee’s bookstore, Sam’s Club, Domino’s Pizza and Target as well as various campus organizations participated last year.

There is no selling allowed on campus, so students do not need to worry about spending their lunch money. Businesses and campus organizations reach out to the students through creative ways such as fun activities, refreshments and samples, and discussions with students regarding opportunities. Some more exciting activities have included games like miniature golfing, dunking booths and guitar hero.

Lady Blazer's softball has teamed up with Student Life and the America Red Cross to host a blood drive on Thursday. The Bloodmobile will be in the Nevins Hall parking from noon until 4 p.m. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate and give the gift of life.

“It gave me a lot of information that was useful for freshman and about different organizations on campus,” said sophomore Ana Fraser, who plans to attend again on Thursday. “There were a lot of activities, almost like a miniature fair.”

"In the past we’ve held it in Palms quad, but we are moving it to the front lawn because the event has outgrown the quad - we need more space," Trisha Taylor, Office of Student Life, said. "The event is for VSU students only and its tons of fun."

Parking is available in the decks on North Oak Street and Sustella Avenue. Call the Office of Student Life at 333-5674 for more information.
