Welcome to First-Year Programs

First-year programs are considered high-impact practices that help students adjust to college life, ease the transition from high school to college, and offer ongoing support for students through their 30th earned credit hour.

First-Year Programs currently falls under the department of University Advising & Student Transitions and includes two different programs: First-Year Learning Communities (FLCs) and the Summer Ignite Program.

FLCs

First-Year Learning Communities (FLCs) provide an opportunity for students to begin their college experience with other students who share similar interests and career objectives. FLCs consist of small groups of 22-25 first-semester college students taking two to three linked courses as a group.

VSU has three types of FLCs:

  1. Major based
  2. Theme based
  3. Residential

For more information on the FLC program, visit the First Year Learning Communities page.

Summer Ignite Program

The Summer Ignite Program is an invitation-only program designed for a select group of students who wish to attend VSU but did not meet the requirements for regular admission. Over a 7-week semester, students will take three classes (8 credit hours) designed to prepare them for educational success at VSU. The Summer Ignite Program will help students meet the necessary requirements to become a fully enrolled VSU student for the sequential Fall term.

For more information, visit the Summer Ignite Program page.
