M.S. Degree with a Major in Criminal Justice

  • Total Credit Hours: 36
  • Degree Format: Hybrid, Online, Traditional

Criminal justice majors study the structure and function of the criminal justice system as it applies to adults and juveniles, focusing on criminal laws on the federal, state and local level and how they relate to the Constitution of the United States. Criminal justice students at Valdosta State University study various theories of criminology, learn how to apply scientific research techniques and related statistical techniques to the study of crime, and examine the criminal justice systems of countries around the world.

The VSYOU Difference

Students in the Valdosta State criminal justice program enjoy small upper-level class size and a close relationship with professors. Students have an opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the field by working on research projects with faculty members, completing internships and participating in study abroad programs. In addition, the department sponsors annual or biannual trips to Asia, Europe or Australia led by faculty members. Students who excel academically may be invited to participate in Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

What You'll Learn

Students in the Master of Science degree program may choose from one of two tracks. Students who choose the applied criminal justice track focus on courts, corrections or law enforcement, while those who select the research and theory track explore the causes and correlations of crime theoretically and analytically. Students who complete the degree program are prepared for careers in law enforcement, crime analysis, criminalistics and criminal justice instruction and are also prepared to continue their education in law school, foreign exchange programs or Ph.D. programs.
